The Crit’Air sticker system is expanding in 2023. The goal is to identify the cars that emit the most greenhouse gases in order to reduce air pollution. Some cities have been added to the system, and new restrictions have been introduced. We’ve gathered all the information for you and will tell you how to get your sticker. Are there any changes to the Crit’Air sticker system in 2023? Let’s find out.
Cities affected by the Crit’Air sticker system in 2023
Most major French cities already have low-emission zones (LEZs). With a view to continuous improvement, these cities are starting to take action against cars in Crit’Air categories 4 and 5. These vehicles are considered the most polluting on the road and should no longer be allowed to circulate. Furthermore, all other motorized vehicles must have their own Crit’Air sticker to be able to drive freely. Don’t wait any longer and order your Crit’Air sticker as soon as possible. Without this sticker,
you risk a fine ranging from €45 to €450! In the worst-case scenario, if your vehicle pollutes significantly more than the permitted limit, it could be impounded. The 11 French metropolitan areas primarily affected are Aix-Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Rouen, Nice, Montpellier, Toulon, Strasbourg, Grenoble, Reims, and Greater Paris. As for the Low Emission Zones (LEZs).
These areas include the Lyon metropolitan area, Grenoble-Alpes-Métropole, the city of Paris, and the Greater Paris metropolitan area. The goal is to transform some urban areas into Low Emission Zones (LEZs) within two years, reaching a total of 10. However, the fight against polluting cars promises to be tough, as there are almost 4 million vehicles in categories 4 and 5 alone. Yet, at least 1.5 million cars remain unidentified according to their current Crit’Air classification. New restrictions concerning LEZs
Are there new restrictions concerning LEZs? It should be noted that the Government has decided to begin implementing automated enforcement against category 4 and 5 vehicles. This automated enforcement is scheduled to be fully implemented by the second half of 2024. It applies to both private vehicles and heavy goods vehicles. The first group will face an average fine of €68, while heavy goods vehicles will receive a fine of €135 or even more depending on the surcharge.
Crit’Air sticker These restrictions directly affect more than 40% of the French population, representing just over 4.5 million vehicles. Although no concrete solution has yet been implemented regarding the replacement of these cars, owners will therefore have to sell or trade them in, or risk being banned from driving.

How to order your Crit’Air sticker? Ordering your Crit’Air sticker is quick and easy, as it can be done online. You will need several pieces of information: your car’s registration number, your personal details, your name, and your address. Once you have filled in all the fields correctly, you will receive your sticker no later than the following week.
If you would like to assess your car’s rating before ordering your Crit’Air sticker, you can check your car’s likely classification. The website offers a rating simulator for this purpose. However, this is only a simulation and not definitive information. The second way to buy your sticker is to go to an automated purchase kiosk. These can be found almost everywhere, particularly in garages and gas stations. After a few clicks on the screen, the machine will print your ticket, and you can drive freely in the city. The most polluting cars are being phased out gradually. To differentiate between them, the Crit’Air sticker is mandatory for all motorized vehicles, ranging from the most polluting (category 5) to the least polluting (category 0). Starting in 2023, regulations established within low-emission zones completely prohibit access to category 4 and 5 vehicles. The goal is to reach category 3 by 2026. So don’t wait any longer and order your Crit’Air sticker now.
