Toyota is innovating in hydrogen engine technology for a sustainable future

Publié le 9 December 2025 par Pistonelle Vectalia

Toyota, regularly criticized for its limited commitment to electric vehicles, is once again demonstrating its interest in optimizing internal combustion engines. The Japanese automaker has developed a new version of its internal combustion engine, capable of running on a variety of fuels, including more environmentally friendly solutions such as gasoline, synthetic fuel, biodiesel, and hydrogen.

Toyota’s Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

Toyota’s plan to achieve carbon neutrality is not limited to the introduction of battery electric vehicles. It also extends to plug-in hybrid vehicles, conventional hybrids, and internal combustion engine vehicles. Technological advancements in the field of hydrogen have led to the development of a new generation of more efficient internal combustion engines, capable of running on a diverse range of fuels, including carbon-neutral solutions such as synthetic e-fuels, biodiesel, and hydrogen.

Akio Toyoda’s Role in the Development of Hydrogen Engines

Toyota’s president and former CEO, Akio Toyoda, personally championed the development of a race car powered by a hydrogen engine. Instead of opting for a fuel cell vehicle like the Mirai, Toyota engineers sought to make this type of engine viable within a traditional combustion engine. They chose the 1.6-liter, 3-cylinder engine used in the GR Corolla to create a prototype, which was subsequently successfully tested in Japan’s Super Taikyu series.

Making Hydrogen Engines More Efficient for the Road

One of the major challenges Toyota faced was finding the right balance between thermal efficiency and the rapid combustion of hydrogen, which burns faster and at a higher temperature than gasoline. Building on the knowledge gained from the GR Corolla hydrogen-powered race car, Toyota engineers succeeded in making these engines more efficient for road use. Hiroki Nakajima, Toyota’s Chief Technology Officer, stated that the experience gained in developing the hydrogen race car directly contributed to the design of these future production engines. The advantages of these new internal combustion engines: Thanks to technological advancements, these new internal combustion engines can be physically 10 to 20 percent smaller than current models. Furthermore, they are more fuel-efficient and can produce more power. Although these engines can run on a variety of fuels, including hydrogen, Toyota’s short-term goal is to integrate these new, efficient engines into a hybrid powertrain, a concept highly valued by the Japanese automaker.

The Next Generation Engines

Based on this principle, a 1.5-liter engine with turbocharged and naturally aspirated configurations has been developed, as well as a turbocharged 2.0-liter version. These new engines will have a shorter stroke and less torque. However, since they are designed to work in conjunction with a hybrid system, the electric motors will compensate for these weaknesses to create a pleasant driving experience. The only drawback of this technology, for engine enthusiasts, might be lower operating speeds.

Toyota’s Long-Term Vision In the long term, Toyota’s goal is to develop an engine that runs exclusively on carbon-neutral fuels, the only viable alternative to the zero-emission electric motor. It remains to be seen whether this approach will benefit Toyota in a technological competition where the internal combustion engine is already considered a loser. However, one thing is certain: the Japanese automaker remains true to its principles and continues to nurture hopes for a future where internal combustion engines will still have a place.
