Unlike a micro-scratch that only removes the clear coat and paint, a deep scratch can penetrate the primer and the metal. To repair it yourself, there are now various “miracle products” available, such as magic scratch remover sticks. But are they really effective?

How to repair a scratch with body filler?

Body repair with body filler is a fairly complex operation. Nevertheless, it’s the best method for repairing a deep scratch. To do it, you should follow these steps: Clean and fill the scratch

  • To thoroughly clean the scratch, apply alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. After this step, fill the scratch with body filler. To spread it more easily, use a squeegee. Then, wait 5 minutes for it to dry.

To remove excess filler, use an abrasive foam sanding block and leveling fluid. After this, gently rub the scratched area with a dry cloth.

Applying Paint For painting, use a very fine brush. For a uniform color, use a suitable touch-up paint. Once applied, allow at least 10 hours for drying. Finally, to complete the scratch repair, apply a thin coat of clear coat. (See our article:Review of the inflatable paint booth

Can you effectively remove a scratch with polish? Unlike using filler, just like with paintless dent repair (PDR),Car polish is often sold in kits. These kits include all the necessary products and materials to repair scratches. They also come with instructions. To make it even easier to use, some brands even offer video tutorials online.

On paper, car polish seems capable of repairing a deep scratch in just a few steps. However, in practice, if you make a mistake, the consequences could be disastrous because instead of being repaired, the scratch could worsen.

And what about those magic scratch-removing sticks? Are they reliable?

For micro-scratches, a scratch-removing stick might be effective. However, for a deep scratch, it’s not advisable to use this type of product. It would simply be a waste of money.
