For some time now, you’ve been feeling more vibrations and shocks while driving your car. Even if it doesn’t pose an immediate danger, this situation is quite unpleasant. If you want to fix this problem, you’ll need to install a new silent block in your vehicle. If you’ve never heard of this car part before, you should know that you’ll need to learn more about its role and how to install it. Here’s everything you need to know about silent blocks and, in particular, their purpose.
What is the role of a silent block?
Before learning how to install a silent block on your vehicle, it’s essential to understand the role of this car part. It’s a suspension component designed to absorb all the shocks you experience while driving. In other words, its function is to dampen the vibrations and noises of the car.For your information, silent blocks are widely used in motorsport and sports cars. So, if you have one, be aware that there can be 4 to 8 silent blocks in your car. Located in the suspension arms, these are wear parts that need to be checked or replaced from time to time to avoid putting yourself at risk while driving. Keep in mind that without this essential part, you cannot drive. By dampening noise, vibrations, and shocks generated by the engine, the silent block maintains the correct geometry of your car and ensures superior driving comfort in all circumstances. There are different types of silent blocks on the market: The most common model consists of an elastic block located between two metal parts connecting the engine and the chassis,
The anti-roll silent block You can find this model in the form of a connecting rod surrounded by an elastic block or a cylinder with a rigid piece connecting the two ends. The elastic part of the piece is connected to the engine or chassis, and the metal support is located on the opposite side.
The hydraulic silent block: it operates with oil and is often controlled electronically. The exhaust silent block: it reinforces the exhaust system by keeping it on the chassis to prevent vibrations. This model must be heat-resistant. The rocker arm silent block: it works by compression. This is why it is positioned horizontally so that it can support the downward pull of the engine mass. There are therefore two silent blocks, one on the timing belt side and the other on the opposite side. In addition to these two parts, a third one must be added, located at the rear or in the middle of the engine. This third part’s role is to keep everything balanced and prevent the assembly from tipping over.
- Silent block: what is its role?
- Why install a silent block? You should consider installing a new silent block when you feel that the one in your vehicle is defective. A damaged silent block causes vibrations that are transmitted through the body. If the part located in the engine compartment is faulty, you will notice vibrations in the steering wheel
- as well as jerking when starting and accelerating. You will also notice that the clutch is slipping and your gears are jumping out of gear. If the stabilizer bar bushing is faulty, your vehicle will exhibit poor handling and a tendency to pull while driving. As for the bushings located on the suspension, their malfunction will cause clunking noises. If the parts in your car are hydraulic models, you will likely notice signs of fluid leaks.
- Generally speaking, when you experience problems with a vibrating steering wheel, a slipping clutch, a shifter that moves while driving, and jerking when accelerating, you should install new bushings. To avoid these problems, it is strongly recommended to check your bushings every 80,000 kilometers. If you reach 100,000 kilometers, they will need to be replaced, especially those located near the engine. How to install a bushing? To install a bushing, you will need a new one and a tool kit. First, you’ll need to access your engine mount. Access to this part depends, of course, on its location in the vehicle. However, regardless of its location, start by
- raising the car with a jack and placing it on jack stands to secure it. Then remove the necessary parts. To install an engine mount, for example, you will need to remove the battery and/or the cooling system depending on where the part to be replaced is located (timing belt side, transmission side, etc.). Next, remove the existing bushing. To do this, simply remove the part after clearing access. If it’s a stabilizer bar bushing, you’ll need to remove the bar nuts and detach the bar before pulling the bushing out. However, if the part is difficult to remove, you can use a bushing puller.
Finally, install the new bushing. Once the faulty one is removed, you can install the new one. Simply insert the new part and tighten the bolts, respecting the torque specifications recommended in your vehicle’s service manual. Reinstall all the removed parts in the reverse order of disassembly. Replace the wheel on your vehicle and jack it up to remove the jack stands. Lower your car and make sure everything is working properly by taking it for a short drive. If you notice any remaining problems, we advise you to consult your mechanic.
