The second leader in electric cars surpasses Tesla again, but not thanks to its electric models.

BYD, the Chinese automotive giant, currently ranks fifth in the global ranking of automakers across all powertrains and is the second-largest electric vehicle manufacturer, just behind Tesla. In August, BYD climbed to fourth place, significantly surpassing Tesla, not because of its electric vehicles, but because of its diverse product range. Electric vehicles are gaining popularity, particularly in Europe, where they are outselling diesel cars, accounting for more than 20% of the market this summer. This trend is fueled by the expansion of Chinese brands, despite European resistance and measures taken by Brussels to limit their influence. BYD continues to expand, especially in Europe, and China has become the world’s largest car exporter. BYD ranks behind Tesla but ahead of Volkswagen in terms of electric vehicle sales. The diversity of BYD’s product line, including non-electric vehicles, allows it to outperform Tesla in the overall ranking of automakers. In August, BYD surpassed Hyundai with a 4.8% market share, a 4.7% increase compared to the previous month. The company continues its upward trajectory, overtaking Volkswagen in the Chinese market and closing in on Honda. However, Toyota remains the undisputed market leader with a 9.8% share. Tesla, despite being a global leader in the electric vehicle sector, does not rank among the top 10 manufacturers across all powertrain types due to its exclusively electric offerings. BYD, on the other hand, sold 274,086 electrified vehicles in August, including 145,627 fully electric vehicles and 128,459 plug-in hybrids.
