When to replace your vehicle’s tires

Tires play a central role in a vehicle’s performance and safety. They are the only point of contact between the car and the road, ensuring optimal handling, stability, and appropriate braking distances. To guarantee their effectiveness, it is crucial to understand their composition and know when to replace them.

Tire Components

A tire is made up of several elements that work together to deliver optimal performance.

The casing is the tire’s internal structure, while the bead wires ensure it is held securely on the rim. An airtight rubber liner replaces the traditional inner tube, and the tread, in contact with the road, is designed to provide maximum grip. The sidewalls, made of flexible rubber, absorb shocks and protect the tire from deformation.

The materials used in tire manufacturing play a decisive role. More than 200 components, including various rubbers and additives (silica, carbon black, resin, sulfur), are blended to achieve the desired characteristics: grip, comfort, handling, braking, durability, lifespan, and rolling noise.

The specific dimensions and characteristics of a tire include its width, height, diameter, load index, and speed rating. Since November 2012, European tire labeling regulations have provided consumers with information on tire safety and environmental impact.

When to replace a car tire

Tires wear out over time and with use. Here’s how to know when to change them.

The lifespan of a tire varies, but is generally around 30,000 kilometers. The legal tread depth is set at 1.6 mm, although it’s advisable to change them before reaching this threshold. Uneven wear can indicate an alignment or pressure problem and requires professional advice. Damage can result from hard impacts against curbs or driving fast over potholes. Punctures, bulges, or cuts signal damage. Continuing to drive with a damaged tire risks causing a puncture or blowout.

Aging is another factor to monitor. A tire may show signs of cracking or deformation after 8 to 10 years, even with regular maintenance. An old tire loses performance and must be replaced to avoid hazards. Tire performance deteriorates over time. Decreased grip or longer braking distances indicate that it’s time to replace them. Front tires wear out faster on front-wheel-drive vehicles, while on rear-wheel-drive vehicles, it’s the rear tires that wear out the fastest.

To ensure your vehicle’s safety and performance, it’s essential to regularly check your tire condition and replace them when necessary. To learn more about the different types of tires suited to each season and condition, see our guide on
