A new, stricter vehicle inspection will be introduced in May 2018.

A new type of vehicle inspection is planned for 2018. It will remain in the same spirit as the traditional inspections, but will be slightly more rigorous. This is causing concern for some individuals. From 123 to 137 inspection points for the new May 2018 vehicle inspection

New May 2018 vehicle inspection

Previously, when a vehicle was deemed to have major defects (the highest level), the motorist was only required to bring their vehicle back to the inspection center within 2 months for a follow-up inspection. This allowed enough time to plan the repair of these defects.

The new inspection will be more thorough and will be a game-changer. From now on, there will be a “critical” level above the level of major defects; and, worst of all, these 127 new defects could lead to the vehicle being immobilized. Repairs to be carried out within 24 hours Following the inspection, vehicles found to have critical-level defects will have to return to the center within 24 hours for verification. The timeframe is very short and doesn’t allow drivers the option of choosing the cheapest garage for repairs. As a result, several garages could take advantage of the situation.

However, it would be wise to have an expert technician available to perform a sort of preliminary inspection before going to the center for a full service. A one-day wait seems like a long timeframe that will deter many. Those unable to repair their vehicle will be forced to abandon it at home.

They could also choose to continue driving it, but they would be breaking the law. Another solution would be to rent a truck to tow the vehicle. But the cost of renting a flatbed truck would likely force drivers to accept the first repair quote they receive.

In reality, ideas like abandoning one’s vehicle could be even more costly. Indeed, Article R635-8 of the Penal Code punishes the abandonment of a wrecked vehicle with a fine of €1,500; this can increase to €3,000 in case of repeated offenses. Furthermore, drivers who abandon their vehicles are liable for any damage the abandoned car may cause.

Those who decide to continue driving illegally will be subject to a €135 fine under Article R.323-1 of the French Highway Code, in addition to the possibility of their car being impounded.

This provision will take effect in May, specifically on May 20, 2018. It seems likely that some will bring forward their vehicle inspections by a few months to take advantage of the current regulations governing this area, even just a few weeks after the new provision comes into force.
