The invention of the automobile did not begin in the last century. Indeed, humankind had already considered replacing horses with an autonomous machine since the time of Leonardo da Vinci. The Beginnings of Steam-Powered Cars and Their Challenges
Long before the development of internal combustion engines, automobiles were mainly powered by steam engines. Among the very first models was the steam-powered wagon, the brainchild of the French military engineer Joseph Cugnot in 1769. Lacking both steering and braking systems, this steam-powered vehicle could reach a speed of 4 km/h and a range of 15 minutes. Primarily used in the military, the steam-powered wagon was used to tow cannons. Deemed impractical, it did not achieve the expected success.
For passenger transport, we had to wait until 1801. At that time, inventor Richard Trevithick developed the first steam-powered carriage capable of carrying passengers (up to 9 people). Called the London Steam Carriage, it had a range of up to 16 km. However, due to problems with the suspension and steering, the development of this invention was quickly halted.
The advent of internal combustion engines: Inventors had been seeking to develop the use of an internal combustion engine since 1673. However, it wasn’t until 1883 that this technology was truly mastered. And it was from this period that the first automobile manufacturers, such as Panhard & Levassor and Armand Peugeot, emerged.
In 1903, France accounted for nearly half of global automotive production (48.77%). Following France were the United States, Great Britain, Belgium, and Italy.
