Passing your driving test with supervised driving: everything you need to know

The driving test is notoriously difficult, and many candidates fail on their first attempt. Fortunately, there are methods to increase your chances of success and approach the test with more confidence. Supervised driving, available from age 18, allows learner drivers to practice independently with a supervising driver by their side. Here is a detailed guide to this program.

What is supervised driving? Supervised driving allows an adult candidate, after completing an initial 20-hour training course at a driving school, to drive independently with a supervising driver present.

This format aims to offer candidates the opportunity to drive without an instructor, whether they have failed the test or not. This increased responsibility helps learner drivers feel more comfortable and increases their chances of success on test day.

Who can benefit from it, and at what age can you start?

  • To benefit from supervised driving, several conditions must be met: The candidate must be at least 18 years old.
  • They must have held a valid driver’s license (or equivalent) for less than 5 years. They must have completed at least 20 hours of driving lessons in a manual transmission vehicle with a certified instructor. They must obtain a certificate of completion of initial training (AFFI) after a 2-hour appointment with their supervising driver.
  • The supervising driver must have their insurer’s agreement; an extension of coverage may be necessary.
  • If the candidate was already participating in supervised driving before failing the driving test, a new certificate of completion is not required.
  • How does supervised driving work?

Supervised driving begins with mandatory initial training of 20 hours at a driving school with a certified instructor.

The candidate must then choose a supervising driver who must meet these criteria:

5 years of driving experience with a category B license.

No license cancellations or invalidations in the last 5 years.

  • The candidate may choose several accompanying drivers if they wish. Once the initial training certificate is obtained, supervised driving can begin without any time or distance limitations.
  • What is the difference with accompanied driving?

Although supervised driving and accompanied driving share some advantages, several differences distinguish them:

The probationary period after obtaining a license through supervised driving is 3 years, compared to 2 years for accompanied driving. The 12 points are recovered at a rate of 2 points per year.

Furthermore, supervised driving does not entitle the driver to preferential “young driver” insurance rates.

For more information, see the difference between accompanied driving and supervised driving.

What rules must be followed?

  • During supervised driving, the candidate must:
  • Display the “accompanied driving” sticker on the left side of the rear window.

Drive only on French roads and highways and respect the speed limits for new drivers.

Apply the same rules as during driving lessons with an instructor.

The accompanying driver, however, is subject to the same penalties as if they were driving normally, particularly in cases of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Advantages and disadvantages of supervised driving

Supervised driving is an excellent way to improve your driving skills. It is inexpensive because the only costs relate to the vehicle, such as fuel and insurance.

This system allows you to drive regularly and work on your weaknesses by creating a personalized schedule. The learner gains responsibility and independence, which boosts their confidence. There are a few drawbacks, but these can be avoided through the discipline and involvement of the supervising driver. Developing bad habits could jeopardize your success on the exam, hence the importance of staying organized.
