Snow tires mandatory: there will be no penalties before the end of 2022

Since the 2021 law known as the Mountain Law II, which came into effect in January 2021, motorists driving in mountainous areas must equip their vehicles with all-season snow tires or keep snow chains or snow socks in their trunk year-round, even if it is not snowing. This year, 34 departments will be subject to this requirement.

However, the National Council of the Order of Automotive Professionals (CNPA) announced on its website that checks will not be systematic and that there will be no penalties before the end of 2022. “There will be no systematic checks by the police or the gendarmerie, but only in the event of an accident or breakdown,” the CNPA specifies. There will be no penalty for not having winter tires or snow chains before the end of 2022, the Ministry of Transport indicated this Friday, October 28.

In total, 4,173 municipalities across 34 departments are subject to the new 2021 Mountain Law in the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, the Alps, the Jura Mountains, and the Vosges Mountains.
