In France, many people take their driving test each year. There are generally around 1.5 million candidates annually in the country. It’s important to note that registration for the Highway Code exam is mandatory to be able to take the practical driving test, whether as an independent candidate or through a driving school.
Passing this exam is the final requirement for taking the practical driving test, for cars or motorcycles. But what should you know before taking the Highway Code exam? When should you take the Highway Code exam and how do you register?
To take the Highway Code exam, the minimum age is 15 for candidates who wish to obtain a Category B license and are enrolled in a supervised driving program. You can register either through a driving school or as an independent candidate, depending on your preference.
Note that you have the option of registering online as an independent candidate. In this case,
you handle the administrative formalities yourself as well as your online theory training, according to your availability. You will not need to pay any additional fees for managing your application.
If you plan to register with a driving school, the school will manage all your paperwork.
However, remember to gather the necessary registration documents, including passport photos, a photocopy of your ID, proof of registration with the census, a photocopy of your JAPD certificate if you are a French citizen under 25, or a JAPD exemption certificate and a photocopy of your ASSR 2 or ASR certificate if you were born after December 31, 1987. A contract will be drawn up between you and the driving school. This contract outlines the training program, the estimated number of hours for the Highway Code lessons, the fees, and the payment terms. Read this contract carefully so you can easily and quickly change driving schools if needed.

Some modifications were made to the theory test for the driver’s license on May 2, 2016. This new reform particularly affects the questions asked during the Highway Code exam, notably with the aim of introducing future drivers to the correct behaviors to adopt for road safety. The Ministry of the Interior’s question bank has provided a series of 1,000 new questions.
New themes have been introduced by the Macron Law, based on the Reference Framework for Education in Responsible Mobility (REMC). It should be noted that the REMC is a reference document for the road safety education and training program.
Furthermore, on new devices, particularly computers and tablets, the questions now include
photographs of real roads, videos, and digital images taken from aerial views.
However, no changes have been made to the requirements for passing the theory test; it is still necessary to answer 35 out of 40 questions correctly.
Note that
the questions are divided into 9 clearly defined themes. This includes traffic, the driver, the road and other users, administrative matters (general regulations), first aid, the car’s mechanical components, necessary precautions before getting in and out of the vehicle, environmental considerations, and safety equipment. Highway Code: What is the NEPH?
Any candidate wishing to take the theoretical and practical driving tests must have a NEPH code, or Harmonized Prefectural Registration Number, consisting of 12 digits. To obtain it, an application must be made on the ANTS website. You will need to provide proof of identity, proof of address, a school road safety certificate, and proof of participation in the mandatory national service day.
