After sitting idle for several months, exposed to snow and rain, the ignition system has taken a beating!
After replacing the ignition leads, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor arm, and points, it’s time for timing!
- Before timing the distributor, it is strongly recommended to replace the points (breaker points) and properly adjust the gap using a 0.40 mm feeler gauge. The gauge should slide smoothly between the two contacts.
- You will need:

b: a 10 mm wrench c: a long screwdriver
d: some elbow grease Step 1:
Remove the spark plug from cylinder 1 (the one closest to the radiator) and rotate the engine in its direction of rotation until the timing mark P is aligned with the fixed mark on the pulley. Insert the screwdriver into the spark plug hole, only a few centimeters, as the piston of the first cylinder is at the end of its compression stroke and at its maximum height.
Step 2: Remove the distributor cap and check the orientation of the distributor rotor. It should be at approximately 3 o’clock and indicates the position of the high-tension lead for the spark plug of cylinder number 1.
Step 3: Connect a test light screwdriver in parallel to the low-tension circuit. The lead must be connected to ground. With the ignition on, place the tip of the test light screwdriver on the points and turn the distributor (having previously loosened it with a 10mm wrench) in its direction of rotation until the light goes out, indicating that the points are closed. Then, turn very slowly in the opposite direction until the light comes on again.
