According to the highway code, riding a bicycle does not require a driver’s license. However, motorists often wonder whether committing a traffic violation while cycling results in points being deducted from their license. And if so, what type of course is required to regain them quickly?
The main types of violations to know:
Riding on the sidewalk
Outside of designated green zones, cyclists are not allowed to ride with pedestrians. While riding on the sidewalk is permitted, cyclists must dismount at all times. Failure to comply with this regulation can result in a €135 fine.
Riding the wrong way
In addition to cycle paths, the highway code allows cyclists to ride with cars in certain areas. However, there must be no parked cars on their right. Apart from that, it is strictly forbidden to ride against the flow of traffic, under penalty of a fine of 90 to 135 euros.

Making or receiving phone calls
Classified as a fourth-class offense, talking on the phone while cycling constitutes a traffic violation. Therefore, even if you are using an earpiece, you will immediately be subject to a fixed fine of between 90 and 375 euros.
Forgetting to wear a high-visibility vest
Even on a cycle path, cyclists are always required to wear a high-visibility vest at night. Failure to comply with this rule results in a fixed fine of up to €75.
Faulty brakes
Even though a bicycle is not subject to mandatory technical inspection, if a brake defect is detected while riding, it could lead to a fine of €45 to €180.
