Coolant plays a crucial role in preventing engine overheating. Besides periodic oil changes, it’s also highly recommended to check its level frequently, and if it leaks, you should quickly identify the source.

What are the roles of coolant?

To ensure proper engine operation, it needs a minimum amount of heat and must not overheat. This is where coolant comes in. When the engine is running, it ensures that the temperature remains as constant as possible (around 100°C). Also containing antifreeze, it can circulate smoothly through the radiator even at very low temperatures.

What type of coolant should you use for your vehicle?

If your engine is running well and your radiator is in good condition, you can buy a universal coolant (Organic Additive Technology or OAT). Inexpensive, this type of coolant is also potentially effective because it not only cools but also prevents freezing and corrosion. However, if your car is a bit older or your engine is very powerful, you can use a specific coolant. Hybrid Organic Additive Technology (HOT), for example, is a type of coolant better suited to newer or sports cars. And if your engine is nearing the end of its lifespan, the ideal solution would be to use a mineral coolant, also known as Inorganic Additive Technology (IAT).

When should you change the coolant?

The coolant should be changed every 20,000 to 30,000 km. However, if you notice your engine temperature easily rising above 100°C after 15,000 km, it would be wise to change it. Changing this fluid can be done yourself and is less complicated than changing the engine oil.
