In Frankrijk veroorzaakt rijden onder invloed jaarlijks meer dan 1000 verkeersdoden. Sinds juli 2012 zijn automobilisten en motorrijders daarom verplicht een persoonlijke blaastest in hun voertuig te hebben om hun bloedalcoholgehalte te meten. Deze maatregel is echter niet effectief gebleken. Daarom hebben de autoriteiten op 22 mei 2020 besloten deze verplichting af te schaffen om de verkeersveiligheid en de verkeersregels te versterken.
Wat is een blaastest precies?
Een blaastest, ook wel alcoholtester genoemd, is een apparaat dat het alcoholgehalte in het bloed meet. Dit gebeurt door de hoeveelheid alcohol in de uitgeademde lucht te meten. Het moet niet worden verward met een alcoholslot, een hulpmiddel dat specifiek wordt gebruikt in juridische procedures, of met een alcoholslot. Blaastests zijn niet alleen bedoeld voor automobilisten of wetshandhavers. Chemische blaastest
De chemische blaastest werkt door een chemische reactie tussen de alcohol in de uitgeademde lucht en andere stoffen. Dit is het meest voorkomende type blaastest, omdat hij ten eerste goedkoop en ten tweede gebruiksvriendelijk is. Het is echter een apparaat dat slechts voor eenmalig gebruik is bedoeld.

- Ignition Interlock Device (IID)
De IID is verplicht voor bestuurders met een bloedalcoholgehalte (BAC) van meer dan 0,8 g/l. Het doel is om te voorkomen dat bestuurders met een BAC boven de wettelijke limiet achter het stuur kruipen.
