In 2019, as in 2018, the Peugeot 3008 surpassed the Toyota Yaris as the most produced car in France. Although a decline in car production in France is expected, Peugeot remains, for the time being, firmly established in the French market.

Three years later, the 3008 still generates considerable interest

It has now been over three years since Peugeot introduced its 3008 model to the market. Since then, interest among French drivers has continued to grow. In 2019, 245,932 units of the 3008 were produced in France, making it the most produced car in the country. While its sales have slightly decreased compared to 2018, this isn’t due to a decline in consumer interest, but rather the arrival of a competing model from Citroën: the C5 Aircross. The latter sold over 72,000 units in 2019 (in France), thus capturing a share of the 3008’s market, as both vehicles are in the same category.

A second Peugeot model on the podium The Toyota Yaris also maintained its position among the best-selling vehicles in France for 2019. It held the same position the previous year. This very popular model is likely to remain there for a few more years, but it’s another French car that takes third place, and another Peugeot at that: the 2008, manufactured in Mulhouse. Discover the new 3008 in more detail on the leading automotive website, des-autos-et-moi.fr.However, it is certain that the SUV will not return to the rankings next year, as Peugeot has chosen to relocate its assembly to its Vigo plant in Spain. It is therefore possible that Toyota will have two models on the podium in 2020. Indeed, Toyota’s Valenciennes plant will host the production of a brand-new compact SUV model, which could thus replace the 2008 in the rankings.

An expected decline in production in France

Not only does the industry expect a decline in car production in France, but it even anticipates a dramatic drop. This will be due to massive relocations to allow manufacturers to save costs on assembly lines. This prediction comes from the consulting firm IHS Markit, and was announced to the press by the Journal de l’Automobile. According to the firm, while French production is expected to reach 2.2 million vehicles in 2019, once the final figures are tallied, they predict it will fall back to 1.7 million in 2020. It’s worth noting that in 2004, production stood at 3.6 million. If this proves true, French production will have decreased by more than half in 16 years.
