What would the car of the future look like?

Unlike in the 80s or 90s, we no longer imagine what the car of the future will look like. The only question is which will be operational first: the drone taxi or the autonomous car?

To be clear, we already have the necessary technologies to bring futuristic cars to market. But well before that happens, a major overhaul of legislation and the highway code is needed. A democratization of electric cars

In a few years, there will be fewer and fewer vehicles with internal combustion engines. In 2019 alone, electric car sales increased by 38%. And over time, this will continue to rise. Furthermore, what’s interesting is that the range of these electric cars is constantly increasing. The Lucid Air, for example, could travel over 600 km without recharging, compared to nearly 508 km for the Tesla Model X.

The emergence of autonomous vehiclesThanks to front and rear parking sensors and radar, a car could drive safely without a driver on board. Furthermore, the user can set the vehicle’s cruising speed as desired. Currently, Google is the leading pioneer of this concept. However, Tesla, Volkswagen, and Chrysler are also in the race. Even though this type of vehicle is now fully operational, its commercialization still requires time. Indeed, there is still a significant legal vacuum surrounding this concept. In the event of an accident, for example, it is still difficult to determine who will be held responsible. Also, since an autonomous car is driven by AI (artificial intelligence), it is crucial to implement a foolproof security system to prevent any form of hacking.

Towards an increasingly connected vehicle

Depending on the vehicle’s trim level or via an Android car radio, a car can offer features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth A2DP, an HD digital TV tuner, MirrorLink, and OBD2. But in the future, cars could offer even more connectivity options. For example, during navigation, the voice assistant could recognize different types of road signs, such as blue zone parking, no entry signs, and no honking. The emergence of drone taxis: While the use of drone taxis is still difficult to envision in Europe, various prototypes have already been developed in the USA, China, and Dubai. Beyond passenger transport, this concept will also be used for deliveries.
