Renault plans to produce the future electric Twingo at a reduced cost by continuing to manufacture it in Slovenia. This localization strategy, already used for the current model, will continue with the next generation, scheduled for 2026. The French automaker recently reached an agreement with the Slovenian government to launch this new production at its Novo Mesto plant.
Production in Slovenia for reduced costs
Renault has chosen to maintain production of the new electric Twingo in Slovenia in order to control costs. The Novo Mesto plant, already well-known for manufacturing previous Twingo models, will host this new generation. Herbert Steiner, Renault’s industrial director for passenger vehicles, specified that assembly will begin in 2026. According to Slovenian media, Renault aims to produce 150,000 vehicles per year, which could generate 300 additional jobs. An Electric Twingo at a Competitive Price Last November, Renault announced that the future electric Twingo would be launched at a price below €20,000, excluding subsidies, thanks to a partnership with a Chinese company. This decision follows discussions with the Volkswagen Group.
The prototype features round headlights and a rounded rear end, reminiscent of the iconic lines of the original 1993 model.With a small battery, energy consumption is estimated at 10 kWh/100 km, almost half that of most current electric cars.
Renault anticipates a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions over the vehicle’s lifecycle compared to current internal combustion engine vehicles.
Reduced Vehicle Development Time Renault is taking inspiration from Tesla and Chinese companies to accelerate the design of its new models. CEO Luca de Meo has expressed his ambition to halve product development time, reducing it from four years to two. Renault’s Slovenian subsidiary, Revoz, has been manufacturing vehicles in Novo Mesto since the 1970s, including the Twingo and Clio models. This agreement secures the future of this industrial site, whose production had declined in recent years.
